My First Macro

Posted on May 11, 2010

A few months ago a friend offered for sale one of his macro lenses, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro, and I got my first taste of macro photography.

Instantly hooked but having no clue about technique, I was all point & shoot at anything that moves. Or not.

This shot was hand-held in an unpredictable breeze near Cape Town, South Africa in January 2010. Thanks to the high frame rate of my Canon 50D at least one of the frames had just the right spot in focus: the depth of field is razor thin at f/2.8 and the breeze was not going to cooperate, so there I was, rocking back and forth as if to dance with the wind, 6fps and several seconds later, viola violet!
