Grand Prix Lesson 1 of Many

Fit a professional quality lens and you will have to work hard to get messy pictures. But as it turns out, there is a great deal of technique to learn for every situation. Take for example the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November 2009. The first time I try to take pictures of moving subjects… The camera and lens does the job beautifully, but the lesson I did not learn before setting out: you want to capture the motion, not stop the motion. We’re in the desert sun, so light is abundant and the camera + lens combination has no problem shooting at 1/8000 if you let it, but then you get a fronzen moment in time that fails to convey the tremendous speed… Turns out you want to shoot at around 1/120 or slower to get a sense of speed… examples in a future post.
